Graphic novels are everywhere these days. You find them in classrooms, in libraries, even on the required reading lists of college literature classes. Why is the world suddenly so fascinated by these comic books?

In this one-hour talk, Dr. Danièle Archambault will bring you on a guided tour of the world of graphic novels. Find out about the history of graphic novels and the many genres in which they developed. Learn the literary and visual art techniques favored by an array of authors of various cultures and backgrounds. After the presentation, you’ll go home with a list of suggested readings (fiction and non-fiction) and a whole new appreciation for the increasingly popular world of graphic novels!

Danièle Archambault is a linguist and cartoonist. A tenured professor in the linguistics department of the University of Montreal (Quebec) until 1998, she now lives in Palo Alto. A consultant in speech technology since 1986, she is also an expert on Quebec French.

Since 2009, Dr. Archambault  has published several semi-autobiographical graphic novels based on her experiences growing up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is currently teaching the popular graphic novel design class at the Palo Alto Art Center.
